Sri Chamundeshwari Ammavaru is located 24 km east of Nellore town, just 1 km from the sea in Gangapatnam village. The temple was established by Shakta followers over 1100 years ago, and since then, daily offerings and Brahmotsavams have been conducted for the goddess. Historical records indicate that in 1515 CE, Chandragiri Rajulu Chenna Parayya reconstructed the main entrance and reinstalled Sri Ammavaru and the doorkeepers, as inscribed in Telugu on the southern entrance. On April 8, 2009, the goddess was reinstalled, and on May 28, 2009, Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham conducted a grand Maha Kumbhabhishekam.

Sri Ammavari Devasthanam is the fourth among the eighteen Shakti Peethas, residing in the town of Chamundi (Gangapatnam). The temple has a western pond, known as Kollugunta. Devotees report relief from mental illnesses, planetary doshas, and chronic ailments after serving Sri Ammavaru. Couples without children have visited the temple, performed 108 circumambulations (pradakshinas) with devotion for 40 days, and received blessings of progeny. Consequently, devotees offer special prayers and donations to Sri Chamundeshwari Ammavaru, presenting sarees and flowers, particularly on Fridays and Sundays.

Every year, a grand Kalyanam (marriage ceremony) is celebrated for the goddess on the day of the full moon in the month of Aervaka. The villagers of Gangapatnam observe strict vegetarianism from the start of the Brahmotsavams until the end, maintaining cleanliness and devotion during the Kalyanam.
